Definition of toxic waste.
What is toxic waste?
Toxic waste is a waste that is extremely harmful, bad for the environment and poisonous. Toxic waste can be in any form, liquid, solid and even a gas state. Toxic waste comes from everywhere, households, hospitals, office buildings, laboratories, factories, shops, power plants and other industries.
· Toxic waste can harm people very seriously, even killing them. It also messes with the body; radiation destroys cells and can also “mutate” them. Some toxic wastes accumulate in the body, damaging them gradually. Mercury and lead gradually builds up in the body as people eat mercury poisoned food.
· The majority of toxic waste does not degrade in the earth. For thousands of years, it stays harmful, no matter where it’s stored. Officials seal toxic waste in concrete containers and bury them in remote places, such as deep mines. Another alternative is to incinerate the toxic waste, which also releases smoke and toxins into the atmosphere. The last option is to insert bacteria that “eats” the toxic waste or makes it less harmful, but this is expensive and cannot always be used.
· There are nearly two thousand toxic waste sites in the USA, with only around three hundred sites been cleaned up by the EPA, with most of toxic waste not degradable, many more toxic waste landfills need to be constructed.
· Toxic waste varies; it can be toxic medical waste, which is waste that has been infected with disease and viruses, such as band aids or needles. Or toxic waste can be radioactive waste, which is waste that gives off radiation. It also can be chemical waste, which is waste that contains chemicals that may react or are flammable etc.
